Hanna Hyland OOAK Hand carved Wood Doll (cloth Body) Picnic Time Artist W Steiff

  

This doll is over 25 years old and is not perfect. However, she is a rare piece of art by artist, Hanna Hyland.

This set is called "Picnic Time". I don't recall the exact year I bought her but it was before the birth of my son in 2004. She has been lovingly cared for by me for over two decades.

I do not know her history before me. She is hand carved and one of a kind. Her head, arms (just above elbows), legs (just above knees) are all wood (including her shoes and socks). She is made to be a sitting doll having a picnic with her mouse friend. She has hand painted features and her hair is permanently attached. She wears her original outfit made by Hanna.

I have never removed the dress but I do believe it is removable. I can verify that if it's of importance to her new guardian. She sits on a felt display decorated with a stump, rock, and some flowers and a mushroom. There were originally two mushroom and both broke off. The flowers are crushed a bit.

The felt is a bit dusty. I didn't want to work hard on it as I was afraid of causing damage. The set was always displayed in a glass cabinet away from light but after 20 years, dust settles in. There is no bug damage.

She has a basket with some sculpted clay fruits and two wrapped sandwiches I've never unwrapped them to see if they are actually sculpted or just squares wrapped to look like extra sandwiches. There is also a plate with grapes and cheese and two sandwiches with a bite out of each. Her companion is a vintage steiff mouse.

I don't have any certificate for him but believe he is quite old (far older than the doll). His steiff number is very faded.

He has a little hole where his button used to be. For his age he's really excellent.

This sweet girl is between 7"-8" in seated position. Her knees are carved bent in a sitting position so she sent stand but laying her down I measure about 13. Hanna Hyland was best known for her carved Hitty dolls, but she did make a few handfuls of large OOAK wood dolls. She was highlighted in the June/July 2004 Doll Collector magazine. The magazine IS NOT INCLUDED.

I only wanted to show her as a highlighted artist. She was famous for creating a historically accurate Queen Anne doll used by the little girl in the movie "The Patriot". At one point Hanna did some manufactured dolls but went back to her hand made dolls. She's a wonderful artist and extremely talented and humble. Her work is so rare I have no idea on her current value. I set her price at what I paid over 20 years ago. Please remember, she's old but for her age very nice. My home is smoke free. Please don't hesitate to ask questions. I'll do my best to answer accurately. I want her to find a loving home in the hands of a collector that values her part in Americana history and her sweetness.
